Minutes from 3/06/08 EPPC meeting

Attendance: Berglund Smith, Berry, Brady, Challinger, Chiang, Collins, Crotts, Daley, Edelmann, Ellingson (Brady proxy), Ford, Geddie (Crotts proxy), Gatton, Lillibridge, Loker, Meadows, Misra (Berry proxy), Ryder Fox (Daley proxy), Selvester, Sudduth (Selvester proxy), Tinkler, Trechter, Way, Wyrick

1. Minutes: Approved 2/21/08 minutes as submitted, with the amendment that Berglund Smith was present.

2. Agenda: Approved

3. Announcements: Trechter announced the next two EPPC meetings will be held at Selvester's by the Creek. Trechter announced that she is exploring the prerequisite issue with Peoplesoft.  Trechter reminded committee that we may move amendments to action items.

4. Change to EM 05-04: Repeat Policy for students starting graduate Program anew.—Action Item
            Meadows asked for summary of change. Morlock explained that change is necessary because of Title 5 restrictions on validity of courses.
            Passed unanimously.

5. Change to EM 99-03: Writing Proficiency Course Criteria—Action Item
Lillibridge moved to table item to get wider consultation. Tinkler second.
            Passed unanimously.

6. Name Change:  Entrepreneurship and Small Business Mgmt. Pattern to: The Option in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management—Action Item
            Indvik explained that multiple sections of three foundation courses would accommodate increase in students.
            Passed unanimously.

7. New Minor:  Minor in Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management—Action Item
            Indvik summarized revisions to proposal: pagination, new faculty listed, HCSV and CSCI course discrepancies rectified. To confirm that minor's Domain Knowledge is in compliance, Indvik referred committee to EM 86-01. Indvik passed out revised pages of proposal to show how domain knowledge will be presented in catalog.  Domain Knowledge courses will listed in Peoplesoft not the catalog. This provides flexibility and automation.  Wyrick expressed worry that the minor is only 15 units beyond double-counted courses in major.  Challinger expressed worries that Peoplesoft strategy violates students' catalog rights.

Wyrick moved amendment to increase business electives to 9 units to increase minor to 24-26.  Collins second.  Indvik referred EPPC to aforementioned EM. 
            Amendment failed: 4 in favor, rest against.

Challinger moved amendment to put Domain Knowledge course list back in catalog. Meadows second.
            Amendment failed: 0 in favor, all but 2 against, Crotts and Daley abstain.

Edelmann moved amendment to strike "list approved by Department of Management" from Domain Knowledge portion of proposal. Daley second.
            Amendment passed: All but 1 in favor, Brady against.

Action Item passed with all but one in favor, Wyrick abstained.

8. Name Change:  The Certificate in the Theory and Practice of College Composition to: The Certificate in Teaching Writing—Action Item
            Passed unanimously.

9. Significant Change: Master of Arts in English—Action Item
            Davidson and Zhang summarized revisions to proposal to comply with catalog format.
            Passed unanimously.
           
10. Name Change: General English Option to Option in English Literature—Introduction Item
            Berry moved it as an Introduction Item and was seconded by Edelmann.  Zhang explained that the name change resulted from 5 year review. Wyrick expressed approval.
            Passed unanimously as an Introduction Item.

11. New Option:  Option in English Studies—Introduction Item
            Daley moved it as an Introduction Item and was seconded by Crotts. Zhang explained the option would appeal to students interest beyond literature.  Committee discussed awkwardness of "open topic" courses like ENGL 466. Berry expressed concern about hidden or misplaced prerequisites and substitutions of community college courses for 300 level courses. Way asked about the lack of African-American literature courses in the option.
            Passed unanimously as an Introduction Item.

12. Name Change:  Certificate in Cultural Anthropology to Certificate in Applied Anthropology Introduction Item
            Loker moved it as an Introduction Item and was seconded by Edelmann. Crotts confirmed that the certificate has an applied focus.
            Passed unanimously as an Introduction Item

13. Deletion:  Option in Interior Design within the BA in Art—Introduction Item
            Berry moved it as an Introduction Item and was seconded by Tinkler. Bishop explained that the BA was inherited and maintained for students with catalog rights. Department wants to delete the BA focus on a BFA in interior design. Berry, Gatton and Wyrick sought assurance that BA majors will be able to complete their degrees.
            Passed as an Introduction Item: Berry against, Daley abstained.

14. New Program: BA in Chemistry—Introduction Item
            Edelmann moved it as an Introduction Item and was seconded by Daley. 
            Miller explained this program will prepare students for wider range of career plans than existing options. Edelmann asked about impact on CHEM 111 and CHEM 270. Daley recommended that SLOs should be massaged so that they do not duplicate SLOs for other degrees.  Berry expressed concern about hidden prerequisites and articulation problems            Passed unanimously as an Introduction Item.

15. Deletion: Professional Chemistry Option from the BS in Chemistry—Introduction Item
            Lillibridge moved it as an Introduction Item and was seconded by Selvester.   Miller explained this option is unnecessary. Committee asked about catalog rights and articulation.
            Passed unanimously as an Introduction Item.

16. New Option: Advanced Placement for LVN to BSN in Nursing—Introduction Item
            Edelmann moved it as an Introduction Item and was seconded by Lillibridge.  Fox explained that increased demand for nurses has increased pressure to increase admissions and graduates. This option and online instruction will help department meet this demand. Crotts asked admission requirements.  Berry expressed concern about articulation and noted that courses must be listed in catalog copy.
            Passed unanimously as an Introduction Item.
