1. Minutes of February 15, 2007 were approved.

2. Today’s agenda was approved with item 4 moved below item 6.

3. There were no announcements.

4 Faculty Code of Ethics as an FPPP Appendix: Introduction Item

  • Moved by Siegall, second by Postma.
  • There was much discussion about the intent of the language and the organization of the document
  • Siegall asked what people thought about having the code of ethics be enforceable. Tropea recommended taking out the phrase about oral and written reprimands, as well as the word “appropriate”. Hoban asked whether the phrase “responsible University administrator” is clear enough. Siegall recommended the FPPP phrase “appropriate administrator”.
  • The motion passed unanimously.

5. FPPP Changes (Phase III): Introduction Item

  • Moved by Siegall, second by Postma.
  • Siegall introduced the item, giving motivation for the proposed changes.
  • Tropea asked whether there needed to be a sentence asking the senate to re-evaluate the release of FERPers from 5 year review.
  • Postma and Place noted that the stricken language under section F comes from the state education code, and faculty should know what the law is.
  • In section G changes, Place noted that the more ambiguous language might make it more difficult to address unfair lecturer ranges. Postma responded that the current language leads to other unfair practices.
  • Tropea asked if the section H changes are permissible under the CBA. Postma responded that issues of office hours are left to the campuses by the CBA.
  • Postma worried that the section K changes concerning the department committee’s obligation to help faculty make their file could give unsuccessful faculty grounds for complaint.
  • Passed unanimously.

6. Reports

    • Guidelines for Course Syllabi (Roberts): The committee has decided that the syllabi recommendations should be in the form of guidelines (preferably web-based) not an EM.
    • Speech and advocacy (Tropea): The attorney that was supposed to look at the policy will not be doing it.

7. No other
