Gordon Wolfe
2008

I got my bachelor’s in physics, not biology, in 1982, at Harvard University. I fell in love with the West during a summer road trip, and came out to California after graduation intending to go to graduate school in physics, but took a job in Silicon Valley to get some work experience. There I met my wife, Marti, who was a biologist supporting her family by working in a semiconductor lab. We realized we wanted to go to graduate school to study environmental science, so in 1995 we moved up to Washington state where I did a master’s in Forest Resources at the Univ. Washington, focusing on an acid rain project, and then an interdisciplinary PhD combining marine microbiology and atmospheric science.
I really became a microbiologist in a series of postdocs at Univ. Washington, Univ. Georgia, and Oregon State Univ., from 1992-1999, focusing on marine microbiology. I have taken part in research cruises in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, and was working as a visiting scientist at Western Washington Univ. when I was hired to come to CSU Chico, where I started in January 2000.
Here, I teach a variety of major’s classes, focusing on microbiology and ecology, and have also been active in developing curriculum, lab infrastructure, and lab activities ranging from microbiology to human genetics for non-majors. My research, described on my Web site, centers on microbial ecology and cell biology. I have published 12 journal articles since coming to CSU Chico.
