About Us
About FYE
FYE Programs represent a collaborative effort across the University with
particular involvement of Academic Affairs and Student
Affairs. FYE
efforts are coordinated out of both the Provost’s Office (Vice President
for Academic Affairs) and the Vice President for Student
Affairs. There
is a general division of labor between those efforts focused
on academic dimensions of first-year student success and
student experiences outside the classroom, the traditional domain of Student
Affairs. However
there is considerable overlap between the missions of the
two units and the FYE program is one exciting area where
professionals from the two areas work together closely for the benefit
of our students.
Within Academic Affairs, First Year Experience is housed
in the Office of the Provost under the direction of the Dean of Undergraduate
Studies. The Dean of Undergraduate Studies works closely with the
Director of First Year Experience programs. The FYE initiatives
overseen primarily in Academic Affairs include the organization, staffing
and direction of UNIV 101, Introduction to University Life, the CourseLINK program and the Book in Common program. The FYE Director also works
closely with other areas of Academic Affairs that directly impact first-year
students, such as the General Education program, Academic Advising and
Summer Orientation.
Areas of FYE under primary direction of Student Affairs
include the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP, including Summer Bridge
and UNIV 102) and Residence Hall programming. In addition, Student Affairs
is responsible for activities such as the Student Health Center, Psychological
Counseling and Wellness, and a variety of student activities such as CAVE
(Community Action Volunteers in Education), CADEC (Campus Alcohol and
Drug Education Center) and Student Judicial Affairs that have significant
contact with first-year students.
FYE is coordinated by a Task Force that brings
together professionals from all of these areas to review and
discuss, plan and implement, assess and strengthen, FYE programs. For
more information on FYE contact the Dean
of Undergraduate Studies, FYE
Director, or Vice
President for Student Affairs or any of the offices listed
above.
