ABILITY determines what you are capable of doing. MOTIVATION determines what you do. ATTITUDE determines how well you do it. ”

First Year Experience-CSU, Chico

Parents

Welcome

We know you, as parents of new college students, have concerns about the safety, success, and well-being of your sons or daughters. One of the hallmarks of the Chico experience is a small-town, residential environment where students can feel part of a community of learning.

At Chico State we work toward the success of all our students. The First Year Experience is designed to put the support systems in place to help your student succeed. Whether in the residence halls, the classroom, or in the wider Chico community, FYE is purposefully structured to ease the transition from life at home to life on their own, from high school classes to the academic rigors of college, and to help new students cope with the many responsibilities that face them in their transition to college life. At Chico State we believe in educating the whole person by providing students with a strong background in the liberal arts, excellent career preparation, and imbuing our students with a sense of service and community engagement necessary to be an active citizen in a democratic society.

Like many colleges and universities around the country, Chico State has had to deal with problems of alcohol abuse, excessive partying, and issues of students’ personal safety. We take pride in the proactive steps taken by our campus to confront these problems. All incoming students are required to take an alcohol education course. University President Paul Zingg has taken strong action to ensure that fraternities and sororities live up to their promise and true mission of creating a service-oriented social community that supports student success. Chico’s beautiful campus in a small town setting is a relatively safe place for students to live and study, compared to many urban areas. Yet we also recognize that no place is immune to the ills of modern life and take pride in the close relationship between campus and town law enforcement that stops many problems before they occur.

We recognize that you have concerns about your daughter’s or son’s success and safety, and we are committed to working in partnership with you, your student, and the wider Chico community to provide a safe environment for learning, service, and the pursuit of academic excellence.

The FYE Web site is designed to provide a guided tour through the many programs in place to ensure first-year student success. Feel free to explore the Web site. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the Dean of Undergraduate Studies. If you have a chance to visit our beautiful campus, you are invited to stop by my office in Kendall Hall 104.
