First Year Experience-CSU, Chico
Prospective Students
Welcome
Thanks for your interest in Chico State. When you enroll at CSU, Chico, you are entering more than a school; you are, in fact, entering a community. The word “community” comes from the Latin word communis, meaning “common” or “shared.” The First Year Experience program is one important way that we introduce you to this new community, intellectually and socially. The First Year Experience is designed to ensure a smooth transition to university life and includes courses, services, and programs that are built on shared goals and shared experiences.
There are many parts of the First Year Experience that contribute to your success, including Residential Life, Advising, the Book in Common, and a variety of student organizations and leadership opportunities on and off campus. Follow the links below to find out more about these and other programs aimed at first-year student success.
At the heart of the First Year Experience are two course-based opportunities that you should be aware of: CourseLINK and UNIV 101, Introduction to University Life. CourseLINK combines a group of three courses that all freshmen need to take. A variety of CourseLINKs are available. Follow the link to find out more. University 101 is a comprehensive introduction to university life that will help prepare you for the academic, civic, and other challenges that you face as a new member of the Chico community. University 101 classes are capped at 25 students, giving you the chance to meet your fellow students, discover common interests and concerns, as well as to get to know and consult with your instructor. Follow the link to find out more about UNIV 101.
The First-Year Experience Program sponsors, produces and recommends student participation in the CSU, Chico Town Hall Meeting. The Town Hall Meeting takes place one each semester; it is a large-scale public gathering of students, faculty, staff, administrators and community members, coming together to discuss public issues first-year students have researched in the context of the required Academic Writing Course, ENGL 130. To learn more about this important event, an experience that first-year students say engages them and changes their view of themselves, follow the embedded Town Hall link to view a short film showing CSU, Chico students in action.
