Civic Projects
The First-Year Experience Program collaborates with others in the development of civic engagement education. We work to contribute to students’ development and address the needs of our campus and community by taking John Dewey’s vision of public education to heart.
I appeal to teachers . . . to remember that they above all others are the consecrated servants of the democratic ideas in which alone this country is truly a distinctive nation—ideas of friendly and helpful intercourse between all and the equipment of every individual to serve the community by his own best powers in his own best way.

On-the-Creek (2007)
First-year students collaborated with local members of the Maidu Indian Tribe and with CAVE to restore native habitat along Big Chico Creek. Working in teams, the assisted in invasive plant removal and in planting native species along the creek in both campus and community locations.
Self-and-Community Gallery Exhibit (2008)
In partnership with the 1078 community gallery, first-year students created artistic displays focused on themes in their research into the relationship between the self and the community. Their public show was open to all members of the Chico community.
Pennies for Peace (2008-2009)
In collaboration with the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, FYE supported first-year students’ efforts to raise funds in connection with the 2008-2009 Book in Common, Three Cups of Tea. Using water bottles as change containers and in partnership with efforts by University Housing and by a local mosque, students raised almost $8,000 to support humanitarian Greg Mortenson in his effort to build schools in remote regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Future Projects
Projects connected to the ’09-’10 Book in Common, The Soloist, are currently in the planning phase. Likely projects include organization and participation of food drives for local pantries to feed the homeless; support for fundraising efforts that support community members with mental health issues; and projects to support local high school music programs.
Stay tuned as these and other projects take shape!
