Department of Geological Sciences- CSU, Chico

Undergraduate Program

Disciplines within the geological and environmental sciences are focused on giving students a strong understanding of the earth’s physical and biological systems that extend from the core of the earth to space beyond our solar system. Building on learning both in and outside the classroom, students will conduct applied and basic research to enhance their understanding of these systems. A major learning goal is that students recognize and understand human activities, the environment, and the local, regional, and global scale.

Environmental science is the study of interactions within the earth’s biosphere, concentrating on natural and human-made perturbations such as pollution, climate change, and resource management. The BS in environmental science prepares students for careers in areas such as pollution investigation and remediation, resource conservation, or environmental management. Each of the five degree options also provides students with a firm foundation for graduate studies.

Geology is the study of processes occurring in or on the earth. The BS in geology prepares students for careers or graduate education in fields such as resource exploration, hydrogeology, or environmental geology.

Students who pursue a BS in geosciences must choose an option. All options have 15 core units in common. The science education option prepares students who are considering teaching science in secondary schools.

A major feature of all degree programs is that they place a strong emphasis on providing students with excellent hands-on skills. Geology students develop field skills in mapping, describing rocks, and use of maps and compass. Students in the various options under environmental sciences likewise learn to use state-of-the-art instruments and field techniques for water measurement and testing, chemical analysis, vegetation inventory, geophysics, and meteorology.

Success in virtually all careers depends on developing strong skills in writing, oral presentations, and computer applications. A sequence of training in these areas through courses in the majors supplements general university requirements. During the senior year, students complete a capstone course that leads to creation of significant samples of investigative skills, data analysis, writing, poster presentation, and related computer skills.  These works provide a portfolio of materials to share with prospective employers.

Department Requirements

See "Requirements for the Bachelor's Degree" in the University Catalog for complete details on general degree requirements. A minimum of 40 units, including those required for the major, must be upper division.
