Welcome to Interdisciplinary and International Academic Programs


As its name implies, the School of Graduate, International and Interdisciplinary Studies is home to a variety of interdisciplinary and international academic programs, both at the undergraduate and the graduate level. These programs allow students to pursue academic goals that transcend the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines, combining and synthesizing coursework from a variety of disciplines and perspectives in innovative and fruitful ways.


At the undergraduate level the School offers a number of academic programs tied to areas of the world, including degree majors in Latin American Studies and Modern Jewish Studies, and minors in African Studies, Asian Studies, European Studies, Modern Jewish and Israel Studies, Latin American Studies, Middle Eastern Studies. A minor in Leadership Studies is also offered.


The School is also home to an undergraduate degree major and a number of minors in Multicultural and Gender Studies. These include the B.A. in Multicultural and Gender Studies with General and Women’s Studies Options, and minors in Multicultural Studies, African American Studies, American Indian Studies, Asian American Studies, Chicano Studies, and Managing Diversity in Organizations, Sexual Diversity Studies, and Women’s Studies.


The Special Major, also housed in the School, provides students with the opportunity to design unique courses of study leading to the Bachelor of Arts or the Bachelor of Science degree.


Finally, the School is host to the Self-Instructional Language Program (SILP), which offers tutorial-based curriculum in a number of languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Portuguese, and Russian. Each SILP class employs a native speaker who assists students and enhances their language acquisition and cultural knowledge.


At the graduate level the School is home to the M.A. in Teaching International Languages, which focuses on providing students with the linguistic, cultural, and pedagogical background to teach both foreign languages and English as a second language. GIIS also offers the M.A. and M.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies, providing the opportunity for students to design their own multidisciplinary programs of study to meet their unique needs and professional goals.
