Self Instructional Language Programs
The increase in linguistic diversity in California during recent decades has had a great impact on the lives of people in the state. Within this diverse cultural context, California State University, Chico is committed to helping students develop basic proficiency in a second language by offering courses in languages not commonly taught on the average college campus. Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Portuguese, and Russian are languages currently offered by the Self-Instructional Language Program (SILP).
SILP is a non-traditional second language program based on a self instructional model, the focus being student-centered rather than teacher- centered. Students are responsible for their own learning, working daily with text, audio tapes, and computerized software when available. Students are assisted by native speakers who meet regularly with students to practice conversation and review grammar and syntax. The course grade is determined by a final examination which is conducted by a language specialist.
