African studies is designed to bring to students the most recent and appropriate information concerning Sub-Sahara Africa through an interdisciplinary exploration of its cultures, history, and current problems and prospects.


Students gain an understanding of the forces and relations that interact to influence the continent and which enable them to become more sensitive to the values and cultural differences that exist among the peoples of the world.

The African American Studies Minor focuses on the history, sociology, politics, literature, religion and media presentation of African Americans, both as cultural groups in diaspora and as active agents in the history and culture of the United States. Core courses lay an historical and analytical framework and breadth courses provide a range of perspectives on the African American experience.
