Frequently Asked Questions

I’m not rich and I’m on Financial Aid, how can I afford this?

Many of the programs offered through the Study Abroad Office at Chico State charge the same tuition that students pay to attend Chico State. Students who go abroad through our programs will continue to be eligible for financial aid. In some cases the CAL Grant will not apply. Students are encouraged to begin working with the Financial Aid office at CSU, Chico as early as possible. Additional information on Financial Aid can be found at: http://fa.csuchico.edu/fa/basics/

I don’t speak another language. Can I still go abroad?

Many of the programs we offer do not have a language requirement and offer courses taught entirely in English. We also have several “learn language” programs where students can learn up to FOUR semesters of a language in ONE semester abroad! “Also, don’t rule out the many, MANY locations where English is the language of instruction (even in countries where they speak a different language).”

I am married and have children, what are my options?

Students can, in most cases, take legal dependents (spouse/children) abroad with them. It will be the student’s responsibility to find accommodations, arrange schooling and childcare for his/her children, and make financial arrangements.

When is the best time to Study Abroad?

Students will work with their academic adviser to determine which semester/year is best for them. Most students study abroad during their junior year of college. Some programs allow freshman and sophomores to apply. Students can also opt to go abroad their senior year if they wish. We encourage students to begin planning their semester or year abroad as early as possible to ensure that the courses available to them will work with their degree.

Will studying abroad set back my graduation date?

With careful planning, study abroad should not affect your graduation date. Students who begin to plan their time abroad early, can often still graduate in four to five years. The key is to start planning right now!!!

Will my credits transfer?

All courses taken abroad through CSU, Chico sponsored study abroad programs will be reflected on your CSU, Chico transcript. It is up to the students to work with their academic advisers to figure out how these courses will apply to their majors, minors, general education and/or Upper Division Theme.
