Four Men Sitting on a Bench

Upper Division Theme

Many students like to take courses toward their General Education Upper Division Theme while abroad. The most common themes for study abroad are Cross Cultural Exploration (C), Study Abroad (Q) and Mexico/Central American (I).

There are three courses in every theme that students must take prior to graduation, regardless of the theme they choose. Every theme is comprised of one course in physical science, another in social science, and a third in humanities. Students may take one, two or all three of the courses required in their theme, depending up on the program they choose and prerequisites.

Students who take courses toward their theme abroad must work with the Upper Division Theme Coordinator prior to departure to determine which courses they may take. Students first meet with the Study Abroad Coordinator, who then advises them on which theme best suites their needs.

The Study Abroad Office provides students with special Upper Division Theme Authorization forms during one-on-one advising sessions and application workshops.
