Shift Happens

Happy fall Chico State! With the new academic year in full swing, I would like to take this moment to thank you and remind you that "shift happens," and to offer you a challenge for this year.

First, as Staff Council chair, I would like to thank you. Thank you for the many ways that you make this campus an amazing place for all of us to work. From being the first face that a new student sees, to maintaining our campus internet security, to mowing the iconic lawns of Kendall, to making sure that Laxson Auditorium is bringing the best and brightest stars to Chico, and to all of us in between. Thank you for the dedication, the drive, the talent, the flexibility, and the integrity that you give to this great campus. Through monumental shifts on campus, and successful navigation of each new path we are asked to walk down, you have embraced the fact that "shift happens." You are irreplaceable, and you are appreciated.

Who Is Staff Council?
  Staff Council members

Even though Chico State Staff Council has been on campus since the late 1960’s, it is not unusual for us to hear, "What’s Staff Council?" It’s not so much "what" is Staff Council, as it is "who" Staff Council is. Our council is made up of staff members from our 19 different campus geographic areas. We have a total of 33 staff members who represent the 19 areas on campus. Each Staff Council member represents about 30 staff members within those areas. As an area representative for staff, our members relay important information about events, campus opportunities, program and administration news, and more. The most amazing part about these 33 individuals is that they volunteer for this service in addition to their already busy campus careers. Sometimes, their volunteer service takes them into their own personal time. For more information on who Staff Council is, visit our Staff Council website

Chico State Copy Center’s Don Converse
Is All About That Safety

For the last two years, Don Converse, lead at the Copy Center in Meriam Library, has been a passionate proponent of the safety of pedestrians on our campus. Citing many "close calls" for himself and his coworkers by skateboarders and bicyclists riding through the campus core or disregarding street traffic laws, Don began to take it upon himself to try and do something about it. Don envisioned making a positive change and enlisted the support of Campus Police, Risk Management, and Staff Council to help the Bike & Board Safety Program take off for a "test drive". A positive and "sweet" test drive. Read more...

  Staff Caught Being Awesome
Beginning in March 2015, in an effort to continue to make our campus staff feel appreciated and valuable, Staff Council began recognizing our campus staff members in a new way, and we launched our "Staff Caught Being Awesome" program. Since then, 20 campus staff members have been "caught being awesome."

University’s Needy Children Program Celebrates 25 Years Of Giving Back
This December, the University’s Needy Children Program is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Created by Chico State staff member Patty Darr in the 80’s as an individual project, UNCP was handed over to staff member and Staff Council representative Patsy Dodd in 1990, when the program grew into a campus-wide annual event. Each year since, the Needy Children Program has grown and bloomed under the partnership between Butte County Children’s Services and Staff Council.
