New Business

International Festival and Forums

  • Culture clash horror stories panel lead by Ted
    • Panel will be held from 6 to 7:30 with a social activity planned to take place after the panel.
    • A smart classroom has been ordered for presentations. Punch and cookies will be provided.
    • The panel will be a combination of four international students and four American students. The panel will meet a week in advance at the same time to prepare for the event.
    • Advertisement by means of flyers and internet targeting prospective and alumni study abroad students as well as international students.
    • Panel will share stories of embarrassing moments, and culture shock while abroad. Stories of adventures and challenges will be weaved with a narrative of how to avoid or overcome situations. After panel presentations students will break up into smaller round table discussion.
    • The goal is for students to come away with a theoretical preparation and a positive learning experience.
  • Many other international panels have been prepared and will be taking place at noon and in the evenings. On Wednesday in the free speech area there will be international music and dance.
Dinner Party
  • Several names were discussed for the program and we decided on C.C.C Culture Conversation and Cuisine.
  • Meet new friends and enjoy culture conversation and cuisine in Chico.
  • So far we have five trial runs planned for the end of this semester and summer.
  • Guests will be a mixture of international students and American students. We decided on a range between two to eight guests per house.
  • At orientation students will be informed about the program and guests will fill out forms in advance to advise hosts of allergies and food preferences. Doing this in advance will aid in matching up groups based on dietary needs and international students will have the option of going with a friend for comfort.
  • Hosts will participate in a training session and possible screening. Possible restriction to faculty and staff, people should be referred to program instead of having it open to anyone in the community.
Housing Packet for Orientation
  • Information on house and apartment rental companies, for example which will allow single rooms to be rented out or which places need a group of people to sign a lease together.
  • Lease lengths and options— month to month, six months and 1 year leases.
  • A map of Chico housing areas with recommendations based the students’ comfort and preferences
  • More affordable areas, Quiet areas, party areas slightly dangerous areas ( this way students will know what they are getting into before they sign a lease).
  • Questions to ask before signing a lease, etc…
