Health Services Administration
Advising Information
Graduating on schedule
It is possible to compete the
major in Health Science with an option in Health Services
Administration within a normal schedule (eight semesters for
freshman and four semesters for juniors). To do this, however,
you must take responsibility for staying on schedule. You must
also meet with your advisor prior to registration each semester.
You should use the sample schedules as a starting point for
planning your academic program. You do not have to follow this
sample exactly, but you should keep the following in mind:
- Some courses are only offered
once each year
- some courses have prerquisites which must be
met first
- Some courses are harder than others--balance
the harder and easier courses so that you are not overwhelmed. Don't put off all
of the "hard" courses until the end!
- some courses, while not required prerequisites,
will be easier if you follow the recommended sequencing.
If you are entering as a freshman:
Since a total of 128 units is required for the
Bachelor of Science degree, taking only five three-unit courses each semester
will still leave you short. You should plan on at least three semesters of
eighteen units or taking at least nine units during summer session or
intersession. Otherwise, it will take you longer to graduate. Obviously, any
semester in which you do not complete at least fifteen units will delay your
graduation further unless balanced by additional classes in other semesters.
Required lower division courses can be taken at a community college, but check
with your advisor first to make sure that the course can be substituted.
If you are entering as a Junior:
Your ability to complete the program in four
semesters depends on the total number of units which you have transferred to
Chico and whether or not you have met any of the requirements prior to
transferring here. At a minimum, you must complete 40 upper division courses and
at least 18 of these units must be within the major. You must take nine units
within the upper division General Education thematic requirements and must meet
other general education requirements, including your ethnic and non-Western
requirements.
If you transfer enough units to Chico and meet
all lower division general education requirements, it is possible to complete
your degree in four semesters--even if you have not taken any of the
requirements for the major. To do so, you will have to take at least 18 units a
semester. Otherwise, it will take you longer to graduate. You can reduce the
load during any semester by taking courses during summer session or
intersession. Obviously, any semester in which you do not complete enough units
will delay your graduation further unless balanced by additional classes in
other semesters. Additional required courses might also be taken during summer
or intersession. Required lower division courses can be taken at a community
college, but check with your advisor first to make sure that the course can be
substituted.
Community college classes:
What classes at a community college will apply for CSU, Chico
lower division GE requirements or lower division classes in the
major? Select "START ASSIST", then the community
college. For GE, select "CSU GE-BREADTH" and then the
GE Area (e.g., GE Area B).
Combining the HSA Major and Business
Administration Minor
By planning early, Health Services Administration
majors can also complete the Business Administration Minor with only a few
additional classes. HCSV 130 will be accepted in lieu of MGMT 180. MGMT 231
should be selected for the human resources course. If you plan to do this, you
should consult your advisor early.
