Sierra Cascade Nutrition & Activity Consortium

We partner with the Sierra Cascade Nutrition and Activity Consortium (SCNAC) which is administered through the Network for a Healthy California with federal funding from the United States Department of Agriculture. We work toward improving the health status of low income Californians through increased fruit and vegetable consumption and daily physical activity. Five of our faculty incorporate service learning projects focusing on nutrition and fitness into their classes resulting in hundreds of HCSV students getting professional experience while meeting needs in our community. Below is a quick look at some of the programs we have created through our partnership.

Buena Salud

An afterschool nutrition and activity program for children of migrant laborers.

Leaders for a Lifetime

An afterschool youth development program that teaches leadership, confidence, and preparation for college through community service activities with a nutrition, fitness and health message.

Leaders present health, nutrition and fitness education at area
events.
Leaders perform and teach traditional Hmong dance as a fitness for life activity to area elders.

Read Across America
and Eat, Read, Play

Using popular children's books with nutrition and fitness messages as the central focus, our students create active, age-appropriate lessons for children in grades kindergarten through four. Each lesson has a literacy portion, nutrition content, a fitness activity and a new skill like measuring ingredients, reading a food label or testing flexibility.
