This syllabus includes
descriptions of each of the written assignments. Students should ensure that
submitted papers include all of the required items.
6. Written papers:
All written papers turned in for this course must comply with the following:

or cover pages.

10 characters to the inch.
-- do not exceed the
maximum length for the assignment.
-- papers should be free
of typographical and spelling errors.

credible sources.
7. Confidentiality:
During the course, the instructor, guest speakers, or students may share
information regarding specific organizations or individuals. Such information

attendance is expected.
10. Student
Presentations: Presentations are expected to be kept to the five

equal status to that of a professional job interview, as the purpose of the
presentation is to assist in the preparation for jobs post-graduation. If
overheads, or other media are to be used, ensure that the print is large enough
to be easily read from the back of the classroom. Handouts may be used, if so
desired, but are not required. Visual aids should be prepared in a
manner that they are readable to fellow students in the back of the class. If
you have any questions regarding the preparation, appropriateness or use of
overheads, handouts, or visual aids, please contact instructor during office

TOPIC PAPER AND PRESENTATION
Assignment: Select a management topic area (e.g. motivation,
decision making, etc.) from the course syllabus and develop a three page paper
and a brief presentation. Sign up at the second class session. Presentations
will be incorporated into the appropriate class session. You should discuss
your paper with the instructor at least two weeks prior to the scheduled presentation
date if you have any questions about the assignment.
Content: A topic paper/presentation is not intended to be a
mechanical report on books and articles read. Instead, it is an essay where key
issues and themes are uncovered and integrated by the student. Sources other
than the textbook are to be used. Work must be cited. A reference page is
required, as references are randomly checked in the library. The paper and
presentation should contain, but are not necessarily limited to:
1. Description
2. Various theories
3. Impact on health services administration
4. Applications
Papers should be a maximum
of three pages (plus endnotes, if you want to use them, and references). This
means that only the major themes can be included. This usually involves writing
one or more drafts in order to boil down the concepts and discussion down to a
brief essay. Papers should be typed, double-spaced and be free of typographical
and spelling errors.
Presentations should be
approximately five minutes in length. They should cover the same area as the
topic paper, but should not be just a reading of the written paper. The
presenter should be prepared to respond to questions from the instructor and
class. The presenter will be expected to project a professional image, such as
one would for a job interview after graduation from the university.
MANAGEMENT INTERVIEW
Assignment: Select an component of the health care delivery
system and interview a manager/leader, educator, or administrator. Use the questions listed below and write a
brief 3 page paper reporting on the interview and how the interview has
impacted on your view of management.
Content: The interview and report should include, but are not
limited to the following:
1. Name of the individual
whom you interviewed and the name of the organization.
2. The individual’s role
within the organization, and the function of the organization.
3. The individual’s
background--both educational and professional.
4. The individual’s day to
day management role.
5. The individual’s
viewpoint about the job--good, bad, future trends as they see it.
6. The individual’s
philosophy on change in the workplace, organizational change and how they deal
with it.
7. The individual’s
recommendations for a student studying health service related career.
The papers are a maximum
of 3 pages. They should be typed, doubled-spaced and free of typographical and
spelling errors. See page 2 of the syllabus for specifics on papers for this
course.
MANAGEMENT STYLE ANALYSIS
Assignment: Select a fiction book or play which
illustrates a management problem. Analyze and report on it. Like a case study,
the book report will provide an opportunity to apply theory learned in this and
other classes to real world situations. It should help to develop your analysis
and decision making/problem solving skills.
Possible books include
(but are not limited to):
Archer, Jeffrey Kane and Abel
Crichton, Michael Rising Sun,
Jurassic Park, Lost World
DeMille, Nelson By the Rivers
of Babylon
Hailey, Arthur Hotel, Airport, Strong
Medicine or any of his other books
Leher, Jim Crown
Oklahoma
Stewart, George Fire
Westheimer, David Von Ryan's Express
Some books do not work for
this assignment, such as John Grisham's books. The book Disclosure, Animal Farm
and Lord of the Flies will not be considered for this assignment. Movies of the
books do not work well in the analysis required for this assignment.
Your paper should be three
pages in length and follow the guidelines set forth in the course syllabus.
Content:
1. Briefly
IN ONE PARAGRAPH summarize the book and identify the appropriate characters and
their roles.
2. Analyze one or two
characters' general leadership styles and approach to specific problems/issues.
Analyze the sources of power/authority presented in the story. Identify
alternative approaches and how a different style might impact the outcome.
3. Identify general
organizational/management problems/issues found in the book. These will often
include communications, conflict, planning, and leadership/motivation. Apply
appropriate organizational theories.
4. Identify a specific
organizational/management problem. Select what you believe to be the best
solution and justify your decision.
5. Identify the course of
action which you would take (if you were the character) and any problems or
obstacles which you would expect.
