Course Description: This course addresses major health issues
affecting the child including but not limited to health promotion and disease
prevention, nutrition, family life education, sexually transmitted diseases,
first aide, adult/child/ infant CPR, substance use and abuse, stress and self esteem. The California Health Instruction Framework
content areas, unifying ideas and suggestions for scope and sequence provide
guidelines for integrating health into the classroom and beyond. This course fulfills the

Course Objectives:
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to:
1. Describe the main theoretical approaches to health education.
2. Describe the physical, mental, social, emotional and spiritual elements of wellness.
3. Apply health education theory to the promotion of optimal health for children.
4. Describe the education code and laws at local, state and federal levels that impact health education, including mandated reporting requirements
5. Apply the Health Instruction Framework for California Public Schools.
6. Describe the factors influencing a child’s health behaviors in the 9 content areas of health instruction found in the Framework for California Public Schools
7. Describe the Healthy People 2010 National Health Objectives in planning health instruction.
8. Locate reliable sources of health information and services in the school, community, county, state, federal departments of education as well as professional associations and computer networks.
9. Describe the
prevention and management of communicable and chronic diseases in children.
10. Demonstrate
infant, child and adult CPR skills, rescue breathing and obstructed airway
skills.
11. Explain cultural and ethnic differences in approaches to health and health behaviors.
12. Analyze health curriculum materials for appropriateness and effectiveness.
13. Explain the procedures and mandates for school based health screening exams
14. Select appropriate instructional methodology for health education.
15. Develop a comprehensive lesson plan and corresponding interactive activities.
16. Implement lesson plan and activities in an elementary class setting.
Student
Responsibilities:
Attendance: This is a pre-professional course that demands prompt and consistent attendance. Attendance is required and will be taken at each class session. Students may have no more than two unexcused class sessions. Excess absences will result in a full letter grade reduction.
Grading Policy: Final grades will be calculated from your
scores received on three written examinations, one written and oral presentation
(
Proof of CPR completion is due on or before Nov.9/10, 2005. You will receive 10 points of class credit if you submit a copy of your CPR completion card by this date. No exceptions! Students who do not submit proof of CPR by the end of the course will not receive a grade (Incomplete).

Article Review Due
Date: Sept. 7/8, 2005 30 Points
The article review exposes students to scientific, peer reviewed literature in the health sciences. Guidelines for this assignment are attached.

Outside School Health
Project: Due Date: October 25/26, 2005
The School Health project links health theory to real-life health problems and issues. This assignment allows students to focus upon an area of interest to them by self selecting from a broad variety of project options. See packet for details of this assignment.
CPR VERIFICATION DATE: November 8/9, 2005 10 Points
Submit a photocopy of your valid Infant, Child, Adult CPR card by this date. Failure to submit proof of CPR by this date results in zero points for this activity. Failure to submit proof of CPR will result in an Incomplete grade in this course. There are no exceptions.
