This course is designed to provide upper division
undergraduate and graduate students with an overview of critical issues related
to aging and health. Topics covered include: the biology of aging,
bio-psychosocial models of aging and their impacts on the aging process, medical
models of aging, health promotion and disease prevention, community resources
and social systems designed to provide services to the older adult
population, long term care systems and
death and dying.
After completing this course, the student should be able to:
1.
Analyze myths and facts about elders and their
impact upon your future.
2. Apply
the multidimensional health model to personal life and list behavioral patterns
that affect health status in your later years.
3. Review
the major biological theories of aging and factors affecting longevity.
4. List the
physiological changes that accompany the aging process of each body system and
their effects upon elder’s daily lives.
5. Examine
physiological, psychological and social aspects of sexuality in the later
years.
6. Explore
major concepts regarding nutrition and physical activity in the later years and
the consequences of inadequate management.
7. Review
mental health status and major mental disorders in the older adult population.
8. Explore
major concepts concerned with medication use and misuse among older adults.
9. Describe
the symptoms, causes, prevention and treatment of common chronic and acute
health problems of older adults.
10. Examine
health care delivery to older adults, both acute and long term, and discuss
current issues in the delivery of medical care.
11. Explore
the concepts and issues regarding health promotion and prevention and their
application to the older adult population.
12. Read and
discuss issues surrounding dying, death, and grief as they relate to elders,
those close to them, and those who work with them.
13. Analyze
your personal health history and health behaviors, project their impact on your
health in your later years, and discuss possible health behavior changes to
reduce negative health impacts in the future.
14. Retrieve
several articles on Medline relevant to a selected disease common among elders.
Students have the opportunity to earn 300 points. Points are earned based on performance in the following

Health
Education Fact Sheet: Each student will be required to create an 8
½ by 11 inch (standard size) fact sheet on the chronic disease or acute illness
of their choice for use by older adults in the Butte County Area. The fact
sheet health topic must be approved by the instructor and selected by the
student by September 24, 2007 or earlier. Presentations by all students
of their completed fact sheets will be during final class meeting on December
17, 2007. When developing the content
and design of this fact sheet the student is asked to maintain an awareness of
the population who will be accessing the fact sheet for health information
i.e.: size of font etc… This assignment is worth 50 points toward your final
course grade.
Chronic
Disease Paper: Each student will write a 2-4 page paper on the
chronic disease their choice which affects elder adults (over 60yrs of age).
Please follow APA format, minimum four references required. This assignment is
worth 50points.
Medline
Research Topic: Each student will retrieve medical information
from Medline that relates to a particular disease common among elders. Details
will be discussed in class. This assignment is worth 20 points (10 points for
each topic).
Syllabus
Change:
The instructor reserves the right to make changes as
necessary to this syllabus. If changes are made, at least two weeks of advance
notification will be given to the class. Changes will be announced and posted
on the course portal account.
Academic
Honesty:
The guidelines for the CSU Chico Academic Honesty Policy, as
stated in the University Catalog will be fully adhered to in this course.
Grades and degrees earned by dishonest means devalue those earned by all
students; therefore, it is important that students are aware of CSU Chico
Academic honesty policy as stated in the University Catalog.
Accommodations:
Students with disabilities requesting reasonable
accommodations must first register with Disability Support Services (DSS). DSS
provides documentation to students with disabilities who must then provide the
documentation to their course instructors. Students with disabilities should
notify their course instructors of their need for reasonable accommodation in a
timely manner to ensure sufficient time to arrange reasonable accommodation
implementation and effectiveness. A typical timeframe for arranging reasonable
accommodations for students who are registered with DSS is approximately one to
two weeks.
Classroom
Behavior:
Appropriate classroom behavior is expected of the instructor
and all students. Inappropriate and disruptive classroom behavior including
inappropriate language and gestures, class disruption, disrespect to other
students, and other behavior as determined by the instructor will not be
tolerated and will result in possible removal from the class and/or
disciplinary action as per the university catalog.
Attendance:
Every student is expected to attend class, arrive to class on
time and participate in-class discussions, proposed questions and activities.
You are allowed to miss two three-hour classes without penalty. After missing
two classes, each additional class or partial class missed will result in a 5%
grade reduction. If you are going to miss a class, you should contact the
instructor ahead of time by calling 530-898-5086, and leave a message with name
and phone number.
