Course Description

This course fulfills the California state health education requirement for Multiple Subject Teaching Credential.  Major health issues affecting the child age five to twelve years including but not limited to nutrition, substance use and abuse, disease prevention, HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases, family life education, injury prevention and first aid, and violence prevention are addressed.  Development of age-appropriate, active health education lessons for grades kindergarten through six based on concepts and objectives of the Health Instruction Framework for California Schools is stressed.  Current Infant, Child and Adult CPR certification is required.

Course Rules and Etiquette

All assignments are due as stated in the instructions with each assignment.  Student work received after this time are considered late and are lowered by 5 points for each day late.  No papers will be accepted after 5 days past due.

Attendance with posted messages on the Class Bulletin Board is expected at least once per week. To receive credit, please have each week's discussion posted no later than midnight on Sunday (end of that week). Any postings that contain inflammatory or inappropriate language will be deleted by the instructor.

Written communication with your instructor and your classmates is expected to contain correct grammar, punctuation and spelling.

Course Requirements and Grading

The final grade is based on scores received on Tests are based on material in course lessons and the Health Instruction Framework for California Schools.

CPR Certification

The Commission on Teacher Credentialing made INFANT, CHILD AND ADULT CPR certification a mandate for courses meeting the health education requirement.  To complete this requirement in an online course you must register and complete a CPR course through a community agency.  To receive credit for this course, you must provide a photocopy of the front and back of your up-to-date CPR card by the final week of the semester. Mail to: Dr. Mary Rushka, Department of Health and Community Services, CSU, Chico, Chico, CA 95929-0505.  The CPR certification cards that meet the requirement are:
1. American Red Cross: Community CPR card
2. American Heart Association: BLS Adult and Pediatric Heartsaver card
3. EMP America: Pediatric – MEDIC FIRST AID
Many organizations in most communities offer these courses.  For a course on campus, call the Staff Council Office, x6156, to reserve a space.   Or, call your local American Red Cross, American Heart Association, ambulance service or hospital to inquire about these classes.  The cost ranges from $10.00 to $25.00 and includes the book.  Register early. 

If you have a current INFANT, CHILD AND ADULT CPR card, photocopy it and send it in.  Then, you are done with this requirement.

Failure to meet this requirement will result in an incomplete.

Grading

Students can earn points up to a total of 1000 by submitting their required Learning Activity Reports, submitting their Learning Objectives, by participating in the online class Discussions each week, and completing the 3 tests.  Students can earn up to 300 points for their Bulletin Board Discussion participation, 400 points on the Learning Activities Report,  100 points for completing the CPR requirement, 50 points on the Learning Objectives, and 150 points on the tests.

Student grades are determined by the total points earned in the semester as follows:

900 - 1000 points = A
800 - 899 points = B
700 - 799 points = C
600 - 699 points = D
below 600 points = F
