Current Position: Tromp L’Oeil Muralist
John Pugh is considered to be one of the top tromp l’oeil muralists in the world and has been featured in Time magazine. Examples of Pugh’s work are seen in buildings throughout California including the landmark crumbling wall façade painted on Alva P. Taylor Hall on the CSU, Chico campus. The lifelike features in Pugh’s murals have been designed to “fool the eye” (the translation from the French tromp l’oeil), and people have admitted to attempting to strike up conversations with the human depictions in his work. Pugh has upcoming projects, commissioned in Syracuse, New York; Boise, Idaho; Miami, Florida; Anchorage, Alaska; and the Berryessa Community Center in San Jose, California.
