Joanna Dunlap Cowden Memorial Lecture:
Michael Les Benedict — What Makes a Citizen?
Wed., Oct 10 at 7:30 p.m.
Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall
The infamous 1857 Dred Scott decision denied U.S. citizenship to non-whites, and while Civil War related events seemed to change that definition, Professor Michael Les Benedict, Professor Emeritus at Ohio State University, makes a provocative argument that the war actually narrowed the legal definition of citizenship. Benedict is a leading authority on the U.S. Constitution and the Civil War era.
