Annual Hiestand Concert to Feature Local Percussionist Dan Kinkle
The CSU, Chico Wind Ensemble and Alumni Band featuring percussionist Dan Kinkle are the featured groups and performer during this year’s Daniel Hiestand Memorial Concert, entitled Two Bands for One.
Two Bands for One takes place Saturday, September 29 beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre. This performance honors the memory of Daniel Hiestand, former faculty member at California State University, Chico.
In 1967 Hiestand assumed the position of Director of Bands at Chico State College. From this position he was able to influence many students and educators in Northern California. His pedagogical strategy was simple, he believed in his students.
“He listened to us, supported us, befriended us, and let us bloom in our own time,” noted Royce Tevis, current Director of Bands and a former Hiestand student. “He encouraged us while insisting on our best at all times. His rehearsals were always a work of art, with music being made during each rehearsal. He definitely was a teacher’s teacher in the best sense of the words. Those who worked with him continued to ask his advice long after we had left the University. He was always a true friend to his students.”
Kinkle, a local percussionist and music teacher, has dedicated his performance to Hiestand.
“His passion and love for music lives in us all,” noted Kinkle.
Admission is free and open to the public.
