Chico State Wind Ensemble to Perform “Classical” Band Works Nov. 7
Chico State School of the Arts presents Classically Band with the CSU, Chico Wind Ensemble on Sat., Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. in Harlen Adams Theatre.
Join the Chico State Band for Eric Whitacre’s “Godzilla Eats Las Vegas!” and Morton Gould’s “Jericho: A Rhapsody for Symphonic Band,” along with a selection of marches and pieces by well-known composers Holst, Vaughan Williams, Grainger, Dello Joio, and Chance.
Works being performed wil also include “Toccata Marziale” by Ralph Vaughn Williams, “First Suite in Eb by Gustav Holst, “Tuba Tiger Rag” by Harry Decosta, “Cheerio” by Goldman, and “Americans We” by Henry Fillmore.
“Come enjoy an evening of classic pieces for band,” says Conductor Royce Tevis“In Gould’s In “Jericho Rhapsody,” Tevis notes, “the composer uses jazz rhythms and modern chords, antiphonal trumpets, and heavy percussion to emphasize various sequences in the familiar Old Testament story of Joshua at Jericho.”
Composed in 1996, “Godzilla Eats Las Vegas” has quickly become a classic piece for bands.
“Done with true fun in mind, the audience can hear the fear of Godzilla as he runs amok in Las Vegas destroying all of the icons. Who should come to the rescue, but a fearless army of Elvises.”
“Toccata Marziale” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, notes Tevis, has a very contrapuntal texture, and it was composed for the British Empire Exposition of 1924.
“It has an immense non-contrived vigor perhaps unmatched in all band literature.”
Another Band classic master piece is the “1st Suite in Eb” by Gustav Holst. Tevis says this classic, written in 1909, has three immediately recognizable movements based on English folk songs.
Tevis hopes audience members leave the concert with “a sense of fulfillment and time well spent.”
