May 17 Sounds of the Centuries Choral Concert to Feature Variety of Chico State Choral Groups
The CSU, Chico Music Department will present its spring semester choral concert, Sounds of the Centuries, at 7:30 p.m. on May 17 in Harlen Adams Theatre.
Sounds of the Centuries will feature the Acappella Choir, Chamber Singers, and University Chorus as they explore five centuries of choral music. Sounds of the Centuries will show the relation between different genres of choral music as it has evolved.
“Composers in later generations were not working in a vacuum when they composed,” said David Scholz, Director of Choral Activities at CSU, Chico. “As a result, composers take aspects of earlier eras and meld them into their own style of composition.”
To accurately survey centuries of choral music, the concert will feature Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, early 20th century and contemporary selections, Scholz said.
“Since there are thousands upon thousands of choral pieces in existence today from different eras, countries, and composers, there is no way to cover even a small part of the entire history of choral music,” Scholz said.
Scholz has limited the repertoire of Sounds of the Centuries to choral music spanning five centuries. The pieces will represent the different styles of those time periods.
“When choirs sing Renaissance music, it should have different musical aspects than Romantic music,” Scholz said. “Renaissance music should be sung with a light, clear tone, while Romantic music has a full, open sound.”
Scholz expects the various choral ensembles will put on a good concert — one the audience should readily enjoy.
“At this point in the semester the choral groups have developed a polished, sophisticated sound and are a pleasure to listen to,” Scholz said.
