Wild Cats Jazz Concert to Shine Spotlight on Chico State Jazz Faculty Members

The CSU, Chico Faculty Jazz Ensemble will present “Wild Cats Jazz” at 7:30
p.m. on March 28 in Rowland-Taylor Recital Hall.

Rocky Winslow on trumpet, Grant Levin on piano, Greg D’Augelli on double
bass and Dan Kinkle on drums will perform classic jazz pieces and original
works.

“We chose to do a faculty concert to display new compositions and
arrangements that our jazz group has recently added to its book,” said
Levin, a part-time jazz faculty member.

This small group ensemble will provide an example for music students to
follow.

“My first goal is to build the CSU, Chico jazz program and establish a
well-rounded faculty to enhance students’ learning opportunities,” said
Winslow, a jazz studies professor.

In addition to the normal members of the faculty jazz ensemble, “Wild Cats
Jazz” will feature Lori Bell from San Diego, Calif., on flute and alto
flute. Bell is coming to CSU, Chico because of her ties with music faculty
members.

“She and I have a long-standing musical association,” Levin said. “We’ve
recorded a compact disc together entitled ‘Grant Wishes’ that Beezwax
records released.”

Bell is a flute instructor at San Diego State University and practices a
variety of musical styles. Her touring concert program “From Bach to
Bebop” illustrates her enjoyment of both classical and jazz music.

“We will play in a modern mainstream style of jazz with elements of Latin
and bebop music,” Levin said.

Bell and the faculty members will play Duke Ellington’s upbeat “Caravan” and
Dave Brubeck’s slow and melodic “In Your Own Sweet Way.” This will expose
passionate student musicians and audience members to various types of jazz
music.

“’Wild Cats Jazz’ is a chance to hear world-class musicians perform music
created both across the U.S. and in our own neck of the woods,” Winslow
said.
