Professor Daniel Veidlinger
to Lead 2008 London Semester

DANIEL VEIDLINGER teaches in the department of Religious Studies and focuses on Buddhism, Hinduism and other Eastern Religions.  For many years he has been the advisor for the Religious Studies Students Society and in that role has led fun and informative trips to dozens of interesting religious sites around northern California.  He is also widely traveled in Europe and Asia and has successfully taught in experiential learning environments such as the London semester.

From Newton’s science, Wren’s architecture, Shakespeare’s plays, and Handel’s music through to the modern era of Stephen Hawking, the London Eye, Salman Rushdie and Pink Floyd, London and its people have played an almost unimaginably important role in the development of humanity.

The courses will take advantage of the incredible resources that London offers such as the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, National Army Museum, as well as the Zoo, which was started to house animals brought back from the four corners of the empire, Kew gardens housing plants from around the world, and of course Indian, Pakistani, Jamaican, African and other Diaspora communities in London.

The opportunities to learn about how the world got to be the way it is that are represented by London, above any other city, should not be missed.

As a Canadian, Daniel is also in an ideal position to translate between the British and Americans.  For example, he writes “colour” properly, he knows the metric system and most of all his deep understanding of British culture gained from years of watching Monty Python should ensure that everything runs smoothly.
