School of the Arts

The Departments of Theatre, Music, and Art collaborate to provide students with extensive opportunities through the School of the Arts. A calendar of upcoming events is available for viewing at the School of the Arts Events website.

North State Symphony

Truly a "town/gown" affair, this orchestra serves the cities of Chico, Red Bluff, and Redding and combines the finest student performers with community and professional players, along with world-class guest soloists, great standard repertoire, and exciting new premieres. More information: North State Symphony Web Page or 530-898-5984.

Choral Union

Love to sing? We have several choirs featuring a wide range of repertoire for student and community singers, including the University Chorus, the Gospel Choir, A Cappella Choir, and the Chamber Singers.

Jazz X-Press

A real crowd-pleaser, Jazz X-Press boasts a growing calendar of on- and off-campus performance dates. The group's success is due to its vast repertoire, improvisational abilities, and ability to perform many styles of music. They opened the Telluride Jazz Festival in June 2008.

Opera Workshop

This wonderful blend of music and theatre presents two events each year which feature students and community singers in some of your opera favorites.

Performance Ensembles

Student ensembles are sponsored by the academic departments in the School of the Arts. Participation in these groups is usually connected to courses, which award credit for involvement. Credits and requirements vary. Interested students should consult the appropriate department chair. No performance group "belongs" to a specific major; indeed, auditions or tryouts are open to all -- student interest and potential are the true prerequisites.

Chico State Bands

Several bands, including the Concert Band, the Wind Ensemble, and the Pep Band are frequently heard on campus -- in the concert halls, the gym, and at a variety of events. The bands are open to all interested students by audition and provide entertainment and enjoyment for participants and audiences alike.

Theatre Productions

From Shepard to Shakespeare to Sophocles, theatre faculty, staff, and students produce a dramatic mix, including drama, musical theatre, comedy, dance, and student-directed one-acts. We showcase the widest possible variety of performance styles, staging techniques, authors, periods, and design concepts, including experimental work and new scripts. The Off Broadways, a touring group, perform musical theatre standards all over the North State.

Visual Arts

The college sponsors several galleries: The University Gallery in Taylor Hall, the Janet Turner Print Museum in Laxson Auditorium, the Humanities Center Gallery in Trinity Hall, and a gallery space for both BFA and MFA students.
