This includes children who need to come with parents to class; this is a Chicanocentric classroom and Feminist pedagogy is practiced here. I will bring my children to class on days when the CSUC and CUSD calendars do not mesh, please feel free to do the same to assist your successful completion of this course. Dropping and Adding You are responsible for understanding the policies and procedures about add/drops, academic renewal, etc. found HYPERLINK "http://www.csuchico.edu/catalog/" http://www.csuchico.edu/catalog/. You should be aware of the new deadlines and penalties for adding and dropping classes. Assignments and Grading Policy To help you achieve the above learning goals, your work will be measured in several ways: 1. Attend and actively participate in class. We will be doing a number of group exercises in class and examining a number of audio-visual materials. If you miss an a-v presentation, I do not loan videos, the library owns very few of them, and placing them on reserve is not an option because of copyright laws. Please get notes from a classmate. I do not post them or copy them for you. Working daily with this material is vital to your success. 2. Read all assigned materials including footnotes, end-notes, and bibliographies. 3. Take weekly writing assignments, which meet the 1500 word writing requirement. They will be each Friday and based on the reading and lecture for that week. I will count the top 10 of 15. These cannot be made up. Take final examination. I travel with great regularity. If I am going to miss a day, a substitute instructor will be in class. If I miss a day due to unexpected illness, bonus points will be added to every students final point total. 4. Complete and submit a course evaluation, and pre- and post-assessments. Grading: Weekly Assignment (top 10 of 15 x 10 pts. ea.) 100 points Final Examination 50 points Total 150 points A (4.0) 140-150 A- (3.7) 135-139 B+ (3.3) 129-134 B (3.0) 123-128 B- (2.7) 120-122 C+ (2.3) 114-119 C (2.0) 108-113 C- CR/NC (1.7) 105-107 D+ (1.3) 99-104 D (1.0) 90-98 F (0) below 90 Incompletes: Incompletes will be allowed only in special cases and in accordance with University policies. Please contact me as soon as possible if such a need arises in the semester. There is no extra credit for the course as you get to drop your five lowest assignments. Examination Format: A study guide will be distributed one week prior to the final. The format will be essay. You will be graded on content and presentation as you have one week to prepare. The final examination will be comprehensive. PLEASE bring blue books with you to the examination. University Policies and Campus Resources Academic integrity Students are expected to be familiar with the Universitys Academic Integrity Policy. Your own commitment to learning, as evidenced by your enrollment at California State University, Chico, and the Universitys Academic Integrity Policy requires you to be honest in all your academic course work. Faculty members are required to report all infractions to the Office of Student Judicial Affairs. The policy on academic integrity and other resources related to student conduct can be found at: HYPERLINK "http://www.csuchico.edu/sjd/sja.shtml" http://www.csuchico.edu/sjd/sja.shtml Campus Policy in Compliance with the American Disabilities Act If you need course adaptations or accommodations because of a disability, or if you need to make special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible, or see me during office hours. Students with disabilities requesting accommodations must register with the DSS Office (Disability Support Services) to establish a record of their disability. Special accommodations for exams require ample notice to the testing office and must be submitted to the instructor well in advance of the exam date. Student Computing Computer labs for student use are available HYPERLINK "http://www.csuchico.edu/stcp" http://www.csuchico.edu/stcp located on the 1st floor of the Merriam Library Rm 116 and 450, Tehama Hall Rm.131 and the BMU Rm 301. Additional labs may be available to students in your department/college. Student Services Student services are designed to assist students in the development of their full academic potential and to motivate them to become self-directed learners. Students can find support for services such as skills assessment, individual or group tutorials, subject advising, learning assistance, summer academic preparation and basic skills development. Student services information can be found at: HYPERLINK "http://www.csuchico.edu/5.-studentservices.html" http://www.csuchico.edu/5.-studentservices.html. Disability Services Any student who feels s/he may need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability should contact me privately to discuss your specific needs. Please also contact the Disability Support Services office to coordinate reasonable accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Disabilities Support Services online: HYPERLINK "http://www.csuchico.edu/dss/studentServices/" http://www.csuchico.edu/dss/studentServices/ The DSS phone number is 530-898-5959 Y/TTY or Fax is 530-898-4411. Student Learning Center The mission of the Student Learning Center (SLC) is to provide services that will assist CSU, Chico students to become independent learners. The SLC prepares and supports students in their college course work by offering a variety of programs and resources to meet student needs. The SLC facilitates the academic transition and retention of students from high schools and community colleges by providing study strategy information, content subject tutoring, and supplemental instruction. The SLC is online at HYPERLINK "http://www.csuchico.edu/slc/" http://www.csuchico.edu/slc/. The University Writing Center has been combined with the Student Learning Center Course Title/Number Course Schedule Furlough Statement: Due to extraordinary budget cuts to the CSU, fees to students have been increased 32%, many sections have been cut and faculty will be required to take nine (9) furlough days each semester. These furlough days will unfortunately mean that I will be unable to include all elements of this class that I believe would provide the best educational experience. It is also against the law for me to be on campus, answer phone calls or emails on those days, or perform any job-related duties. Unfortunately this is the result of a dramatic cut to the CSU by the state after years of underfunding the system. This is very unfair to you, but it is the inevitable result of the unwillingness of our governor and legislature to sufficiently increase taxes and raise revenues, and not just student fees, to avoid these drastic cuts. Students who wish to join the fight to return to the California Master Plan for Higher Education, which provided for free education for all qualified students in he state, per President Zinggs Convocation address to the campus, should visit HYPERLINK "http://www.allianceforthecsu.org" http://www.allianceforthecsu.org and participate in the cost and quality of their educational future. My requested furlough days have not yet been approved, but I will provide advanced notice as soon as they are. The first day of furloughs will be the second meeting session of class. Students will be responsible for viewing the movie Adelante Mujeres, available at Meriam Library, by the end of the semester. We will be attending a Teach-in on higher education funding during the week of October 12. Details to follow in class. (Note: subject to change with fair notice.) Please do the following readings for the week they are assigned.
