Dr. Emmerich’s current research focuses on an investigation of Tillie Hardwick v. the United States and how this federal court case in 1983 provided an opportunity for California Indians to reclaim their sovereignty and forge a new self-determined identity.
Professor Emmerich’s articles have appeared in the American Indian Quarterly, American Indian Culture and Research Journal, and Great Plains Quarterly, as well as in several scholarly anthologies. She also has published numerous encyclopedia entries and book reviews in journals including the Annals of Iowa, the Historian, Great Plains Quarterly, the Western Historical Quarterly, the History Teacher, and the Journal of American History.
