Research Interests
Dr. Lawrence's research continues to focus on the subject of her doctoral dissertation, "From High-Class Goods to Bargain Basements: Department Stores, Urban Life and Labor in Chicago and Glasgow, 1890-1930." Other research interests include architectural history, material culture, and landscape history.
Publications
Professor Lawrence has published articles in Urban History, Construction History, and Perspectives in Vernacular Architecture. Her article on the construction of Selfridge's Department Store in London was reprinted in the European Cities and Technology Reader (Routledge Press, 1999). She also has published an encyclopedia entry on the founder of Chicago's Eleanor Clubs, which provided housing for young working women in the early 20th century.
Honors and Awards
Dr. Lawrence has secured financial support for her research from a number of sources, including the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Smithsonian Institution, and and the Social Science Research Council. She is regularly invited to address local civic organizations on issues related to architectural history and the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893.
