Research Interests
Dr. Raftery is completing a monograph focusing on U.S. nation building in the Philippines from 1898 to 1940.
Publications
Professor Raftery is the author of Land of Fair Promise: Politics and Reform in Los Angeles Schools, 1885-1941 (Stanford University Press, 1992). Her articles have appeared in scholarly anthologies and the History of Education Quarterly, California History, and Illinois Historical Journal. In addition to numerous encyclopedia entries, she has published book reviews in the Journal of American History, Pacific Historical Review, Pacific Northwest Quarterly, Western History Quarterly, and History of Education Quarterly.
Honors and Awards
In 2005-2006, Professor Raftery received support for her research from a National Endowment for the Humanities. In 2000, she received a Spencer Foundation Fellowship and was a California State University Scholar. She has received five Huntington Library Fellowship for summer scholars.
