Research Interests

Shown here with his pet coyote Baxter, Dr. Steiner co-directs the North State History-Social Science Project with Jennifer Metherd. He also oversees two Teaching American History grants funded by the U. S. Department of Education: “No Paine, No Gain: A Common Sense Approach to Teaching American History” (with the Chico Unified School District) and “E Pluribus Unum" (with the Glenn County Office of Education). In addition, Professor Steiner serves as the Executive Director of the California Council for History Education.

Publications

Professor Steiner is the author of Of Thee We Sing: Immigrants and American History (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1987). He has contributed articles to scholarly anthologies, as well as publishing numerous encyclopedia entries. His book reviews have appeared in the Journal of Ethnic American History, the History Teacher, and Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science.

Honors and Awards

In 2005 and 1987, Dr. Steiner was the recipient of a Professional Achievement Honor at California State University, Chico. Winner of the Outstanding Teacher Award at Chico State in 1998, he was a Campus Master Teacher from 1995 to 1997. In 1996, Professor Steiner won the Outstanding Academic Advisor Award from both Chico State and the National Academic Advising Association.
