Declaring a History Major, Minor or Certificate

Browse through the History Department ’s website for help in deciding whether to declare a History major, minor, or certificate. Look at the two options for a Bachelor’s degree in History, the General History Option and the Social Science Credential Option. The Social Science Credential Option is for students who intend to become middle school or high school teachers; the General History Option is for everyone else who wants to major in History. Check out the requirements for a Minor in History and for a Certificate in Public History. It is also wise to speak with an advisor before making a decision. Once you have decided on a program, you need to declare your intentions; download the Undergraduate Plan Change Form and bring it to your advisor for signature.

Advising is mandatory for all History majors. If you have not already had a session with your History advisor, plan to spend some time discussing your program and plans when you ask your advisor to sign your Declaration or Change of Major Form. Before bringing in the Declaration or Change of Major Form for your advisor’s signature, you should email him or her the appropriate Program Advising Log (either the General History Option Log or the Social Science Credential Option Log) with your name, student ID number, and email address already filled in. When meeting with your advisor, be sure to bring a complete transcript of all your college and university coursework (you can download it from the Portal). Unsure who your advisor is?
