Mentors for Majors
Many faculty members in the Department of History have volunteered to serve as mentors for one or more History majors. A student may select from among faculty volunteers a mentor with expertise in a field of history in which the student has a particular interest, although this is not a requirement.
Here is a list of expectations that a faculty member might fulfill as a mentor for a major:
- Help you understand the complexities involved in historical study
- Discuss with you key books and topics in a field of specialty
- Provide advice on research ideas for papers or a thesis
- Counsel you on how to plan ahead in meeting deadlines
- Answer questions about graduate study or career choices
Note : Mentors are not meant to replace the student’s departmental undergraduate advisor. Students should rely on their departmental undergraduate advisor for guidance on course selection and the completion of major requirements.
See the History Department ’s Chair, Dr. Matray, in Trinity Hall, room 223B for a complete list of mentor professors, or to discuss other details of the mentoring program.
