History is the essence of innumerable biographies. ”
History Department, CSU, Chico
Program Requirements
Although the two versions of the Social Science Credential Option are similar in terms of the total number of units required (60 in the pre July 2005, or old, program versus 64 in the current, or new program), there are significant differences in terms of the way those units are distributed and the content they address. Those differences include an increase of seven units of history and three units of geography in the new program, which are partially offset by the elimination of six units in anthropology, psychology, or sociology. The seven new units of history deal with the acquisition of skills useful to historians (HIST 290, historians and historical methodology, and HIST 295, technology for historians) and the assessment of subject matter competence (HIST 495, portfolio evaluation). The new program replaces the course in physical geography that was required in the old program with SOSC 301 (spatial concepts: geographical patterns and processes) and adds three units in American geography (either GEOG 352, the United States, or GEOG 435, historical geography of North America”).
Only students who began coursework in the old program prior to July 1, 2005 are permitted in that program, and they must complete it by June 30, 2009. All other CSU, Chico students who intend to establish their subject matter competence in social science through the completion of coursework must follow the new program.
