EVENT RECAP

CRHL WESTERN REGION EVENT, JANUARY 20th.

The second half of the season resumed for the CRHL's Western Region on Saturday, January 20 in Cotati, California. The second half began with UC Davis facing off against Sonoma State. It was a thrilling victory for Somona State as Paul Finn scored the game winner in overtime, 6-5. Sonoma State capitalized on Davis' penalties, scoring on three of four powerplays. Shaun Lowe had three goals, and Kyle Kavanaugh had a goal and two assists in the winning effort. Davis was led by Jeff Chomyn, one goal and two assists, and Justin Busch with two goals.
The second game of the day was Monterey Bay and Sonoma State. Monterey Bay got their first victory of the season as they defeated Sonoma State 10-5, despite being outshot 34-25. Leading the way for Monterey Bay was Rey Ramierz who had five goals. Once again Sonoma State's Shaun Lowe led the team with three goals.
The third game of the day featured the number one and two teams in the North, Chico State and UC Davis. Davis prevailed 4-3 on a game-winning goal by Mike Billena. Leading Davis was Steve Ixquiac with a goal and two assists, including the game winning assist.

Chico then turned around and beat Sonoma State 9-6 in the next game. Chico had nine goals from eight different players, and ten different players had at least a point. Shaun Lowe again led Sonoma with two goals and an assist. Neither team could find their rhythm on the penalty kill as Chico went 4 for 4 on the powerplay and Somona 2 for 2.
Monterey Bay was looking for another win against Davis in the next game. It was a hard-fought defensive struggle as Davis won by a score of 2-1. The game winner came with just over four minutes left in the game by Justin Busch. Davis outshot Monterey Bay 31-9 in the game. Monterey Bay got strong goaltending from Randy Dvorak stopping 18 of the 19 shots he faced in the first two periods, and from Ryan VanDerLinden who stopped 11 of the 12 shots he faced in the final two periods.
In the final game of the night Chico State defeated Monterey Bay 9-3. Once again it was a complete team effort from Chico as they had six different goal scorers and nine different players with at least a point. Chico State dominated the shots as they outshot Monterey 48-10. Leading Chico was Chip Fong with three goals, and Nick Nowell who had a goal and three assists.
Sacramento State was scheduled to play in the event in Cotati, but unfortunately was unable to attend and had to forfeit all four of their games to Monterey Bay, Chico, Davis and Sonoma.
