On November 9, Hugh Hammond celebrated the release of his first album, “The Way Home,” the product of over five years of work that began when Hammond was still attending Chico High School. Although Hammond has been interested in music since he was young, it was his high school choir teacher that mentored him and gave him the push that he really needed to pursue songwriting and composing when she agreed to let Hammond write songs for the choir to perform. Two of the songs on “The Way Home,” ”Eyes” and “Storyteller,” were originally written for the Chico High School choir, and “Eyes” even features the group.
Since then, Hugh’s passion for music has only grown. During the summer, he works tirelessly inventing new concepts, writing, composing, and arranging. Although he balances his academics and his music during the school year, he admits that during finals week last semester he was busy in the Student of the Arts studio recording tracks.
Hammond aspires to graduate and go on to earn a PhD in Music Composition. He says he would like to come back to Chico State and teach in the music department.
