Konkow Hall

Housing Themes for the 2008–2009 Academic Year

Honors

Life in Honors House is a wonderful opportunity to balance scholarship and an active social life. Honors houses occupy four of Konkow’s six units. Each unit houses 13 residents plus a student resident advisor (RA) who is usually a former honors house resident. This unique environment is an excellent combination of residence hall life and apartment life. Honors houses provide residents with a quiet academic environment balanced with numerous social activities. In cooperation with honors faculty and honors RAs, residents of honors house create a living environment that enhances their academic life. Space is limited, and your honors in general education program application must be completed before you can be considered for the Honors Houses. Please contact the honors office at 530–898–5749 or by e-mail at hnrs@csuchico.edu.

The Business Resource Center (BRC)

The Business Resource Center (BRC) is a diversity initiative to recruit business majors and retain a diverse student body, ensure academic and professional success for all students, value and recognize the cultural contributions of all students, and create a model pluralistic campus community. Having a theme house in Konkow Hall allows the BRC to pass along these values in an on–campus learning community consisting of 13 first–time freshmen from California and beyond. Programs are designed for residents to become engaged with the University, Chico community, and their fellow residents. Please contact Oscar Haro, advisor, at oharo@csuchico.edu or call 530–898–6359.

Project Math and Science

Residents in this themed–living environment will be provided with in–house tutoring and personalized academic advising. We have found that the combination of living with like-minded students and receiving academic support helps students be highly successful in what can be a very challenging first year.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Jorgen Berglund, assistant professor of mathematics at jjberglund@csuchico.edu or 530–898–5350.

By the way, The Konkow Mathematics and Science House has become a very popular housing option for our incoming mathematics and science students, but there are only 13 spaces available. With the success of our students in mind, the College of Natural Sciences has worked with University Housing to provide a similar living environment for more of our students. Mechoopda Hall has been designated a "study–intensive" housing environment, with 60 spaces set aside for science and mathematics students. (The other 60 spaces in Mechoopda will be filled by students from the College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Construction Management.) If the Konkow Mathematics and Science House is your first choice for housing, Mechoopda Hall should be your second choice!
