Join the Chico Connections Program... University Housing + Thematic Living + the Courses You Need = First Year Success
In the Connections Program you join a theme floor in Whitney Hall with others who are interested in the theme you have chosen. Simply choose one of the Connections Theme Floors as your first housing option, and we will take care of the rest. When you register for classes at Summer Orientation you will automatically be enrolled in three classes for the fall semester, all of which fulfill important university requirements. At Summer Orientation, you will choose the rest of the classes to round out your schedule. This living-learning community asks the questions: "Who am I?", "Who are we?", "Where do I get my identity?" from the personal to the political and beyond. Students engage in an in-depth study of identity - how we form identities; how we create meanings through our identities; how identity-exploration contributes to human development; how choices of communities and organizations, study strategies, peer groups and major influence identity development in college students. Courses include "Introduction to University Life," as well as classes in Psychology, Religious Studies, and the required writing course, ENGL 130. Course link FYE IDENTITY is required if this theme is selected.
Connections 2: Chico as Place
Students learn about CSU, Chico's history, and its past and present role in the broader community. This course provides students with opportunities to engage in local sustainability efforts, meet members of the Mechoopda tribe, observe city politics, and learn about the qualities of Chico as Place from Chico's large city park that extends into a wilderness preserve to Chico's international reputation as a "top ten" arts community. Courses include "Introduction to University Life," as well as classes in Political Science, Communications, and the required writing course, ENGL 130. Course link FYE PLACE is required if this theme is selected.
Connections 3: Business Connections
This thematic is reserved and recommended for declared Business majors. Students meet Business faculty, learn about local businesses, meet managers and owners from a range of local businesses, explore the Business major, and examine Business ethics from a local and global perspective. Across the curriculum, students will delve into the question: What are the challenges facing business in the 21st century? Course link FYE BUSINT is required if this theme is selected.
Every theme in the Connections Program features "Windows on the Majors", a set of presentations and activities that assist students in exploring a variety of majors offered at CSU, Chico. Floor activities are designed to help you meet other students, learn about the campus, and connect to the campus and Chico community in ways that benefit you and those around you. In addition to the Connections Themes . . .
Recreational Sports
Located in Whitney Hall, the Recreational Sports floor consists of 64 first-year students and two resident advisors. These students share common interest in recreational sporting activities. The staff on this floor will provide ample opportunities for the students on this floor to join teams, play sports, and explore other activities on and off campus.
