Winter Break Closure 2017

12/25 to 12/28, 2017 and 1/1/2018
To: All CSU, Chico - State Employees
From: Human Resources Service Center

The CSU, Chico campus will be closed during the Winter Break as follows:  December 25-28 (Monday through Thursday), 2017; and January 1 (Monday), 2018.  Observed and rescheduled holidays cover the closure days.  The campus is currently scheduled to be open on December 29, 2017.  Historically, the Governor and the Chancellor have combined to grant informal time off on this day, but that announcement will not arrive until shortly before the break and is not guaranteed.  Individuals should make plans now regarding whether they will work or take some form of leave in the event that day is not granted.

Planning and Coordination

Departments may plan partial or complete closures for December 29.

  • The intent of the closure is to encourage employees (who are not essential for 24/7 operations) to take time off during this period.
  • Employees may request leave (CTO, Vacation, or their Personal Holiday) for this time.  Employees without sufficient leave may elect not to work, but will receive a pay dock for the time.

On December 29 the campus will be open, but only certain buildings will be accessible.  Employees who wish to work during this time will be accommodated.  Managers with employees who want to work on December 29 are asked to contact Dylan Saake no later than December 1, 2017, to allow ample time for coordinating work locations, supervision, and assignments for employees who wish to work on that day.

Historically, the Governor grants a ½ day (up to four hours) of informal time off on the last campus working day before the Christmas holiday or before the New Year’s holiday.  Assuming the Governor again grants this time off, the campus plans to observe this informal time off on December 29, 2017.  Most non-exempt individuals will need to use a total of 4 hours of vacation leave or CTO to be on paid leave for the entire day of December 29, 2017.  Employees whose duties prevent them from taking the time off on December 29, 2017, may make arrangements with the appropriate administrator to take informal time off on any working day before June 30, 2018.

We anticipate many employees may want to take additional time off the week before the winter break.  We encourage you to speak with your supervisor to discuss vacation leave and coverage during the days the University will be open.

More information about the Winter Break Closure for 2017 will be available later in the year.  General questions can be forwarded to the Human Resources Service Center, (530) 898-6771.
