New Grant Supports Future Rural Teachers
The Chico Rural Teacher Pathway at CSU, Chico, recently funded for $500,000 by CalGrip (California Gang Reduction, Intervention, and Prevention), is a two-year program designed to recruit 30 high school seniors each year who have the desire, but perhaps not the means, to become credentialed teachers. The recruits are from regional populations where students are least likely to receive higher education degrees or teaching certificates.
Bringing China to Chico
A series of Saturday Chinese language and culture classes has proven so popular that it is now featured in eight local schools. The Chico Chinese Language and Culture Program was started by Frank Li, interim director, International Education, and Joel Zimbelman, dean, Humanities and Fine Arts, nearly three years ago. It has since expanded from one weekend class to several classes during the week at schools all over Chico.

Over the last few weeks, I have kept the campus informed of an interesting adventure in my life, namely, accepting an invitation to interview for the presidency of San Diego State University.
Faculty Profile: Sarah Richardson
Sarah Richardson came to CSU, Chico in 2001 to join the Department of Recreation and Parks Management faculty. A PhD wasn’t all Richardson had earned by that time; she was also certified as a professional dog trainer, one of the first in the nation.
Upcoming CD Release
Natalya Shkoda, Music, has received international acclaim since leaving her native Ukraine to pursue a career in piano. She is an assistant professor of piano and coordinator of keyboard studies at CSU, Chico and directs the annual Earl R. and Marilyn Ann Kruschke Prize in Piano Performance, an annual statewide competition.
Student Competition Honors
Five CSU, Chico student teams—recording arts, sustainable manufacturing, Model United Nations, professional sales, and marketing and graphic design/media arts—have won top awards this spring. The achievements of these teams are phenomenal and bring positive attention and honor to us all. We applaud their hard work and extraordinary accomplishments.
