Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC) student employees Shelley Laya and Katie Nicca and former WREC student employee Josh Faylor were presented with the Staff Council’s 2012 Staff Safety Award this fall for their role in saving the life of a student.

In November 2012, a student was exercising on the first floor of the WREC when he suddenly collapsed and stopped breathing. Nicca saw him fall and quickly alerted Laya, who fetched a first aid kit and an automatic external defibrillator (AED). Faylor, who was off-duty at the time, jumped in to help. Working together, the students followed the instructions called out by the AED and delivered a life-saving shock to the student just 66 seconds after his collapse.

“Being smart, acting as a team, doing what had to be done—most of us don’t literally get to do that in our every day jobs,” said CSU, Chico President Paul Zingg at a September 2013 reception at the WREC.

Along with the award, the three received $100 gift cards in recognition of their efforts.
