Precautions Against E-mail Viruses
To protect your computer from e-mail viruses, delete messages and attachments from unknown sources. By not opening these attachments and keeping your anti-virus software up-to-date, you minimize the chances of a virus infecting your computer.
Viruses can harm your computer and files and interfere with networks and servers. Some spread by replicating and mailing itself to others in your address book or by copying itself over local area networks, such as KaZaa, IRC, and others.
Viruses are typically spread by one of the following methods:
- E-mail messages containing an attachment with the virus. You can get a virus by opening these attachments.
- Downloaded files from the Internet. When these files are opened, the virus can spread on your computer.
- Infected disks, such as floppy diskettes, CD-ROMs, and Zip disks. You should scan these disks for viruses before opening any files on them.
