Border Firewall

Information Resources has implemented a firewall at the border of the campus network to help protect against attacks originating from the Internet. The firewall, along with the server security guidelines and desktop management tools, helps ensure that campus machines remain reliable and secure in the increasingly hostile environment of the Internet.

A firewall provides network security by preventing unexpected traffic from entering the network (most importantly, attacks from outside). To be successful in this, and not unintentionally break services, the firewall must 'know' about any servers on campus that should be reachable from the Internet -- such as the campus portal, Web, and e-mail servers.

To request a firewall exception for a server, it must be registered in Omni. Click here to log in to Omni and request a firewall exception on the Firewall tab.
