ISBS 2008 post-conference message |
|
Dear ISBS
members,
The 26th
International Conference on Biomechanics in Sports (ISBS2008) was
successfully conducted on July 14-18, 2008, in Seoul, Korea. First please
allow me to extend my sincere thanks to our conference host, the Seoul
National University, for allowing the conference to be held in their campus.
The Seoul National University is the first national university in Korea, and
is one of the leading universities in Asia and Pacific Region. We have all
proven with our eyes how attractive the campus is and how conducive is its
environment to education and learning. I would also like to extend my
sincere thanks to Dr. Shin, Chairman of Organizing Committee of ISBS2008 and
the President of Korean Society of Sports Biomechanics and his working team
for their one whole year of hard work in organizing this conference, which
was indeed a success. Their work included the conference promotion, fund
raising, inviting keynote speakers, organizing the scientific paper review,
and arranging for the accommodation, transportation, meals, reception, and
social activities, among many other activities. I am sure all conference
participants would all agree with me that the most impressive and
unforgettable event during the conference was the Korea Night in which more
than 300 people representing around 30 countries and regions got together
and play the traditional Korean Drum. I am therefore proud to say that the
ISBS not only provides a platform for the exchange of knowledge and
experiences in bridging the gap between sports theory and practice but also
promotes the exchange of culture and fosters camaraderie among sports
biomechanists all over the world.
In
addition to academic and social activities, the 26th ISBS Conference also
provided an opportunity for the Board and the membership to plan for future
activities and discuss some important ISBS issues such as the ISBS
Constitution and By-Laws, the ISBS Logo, and the Student Travel Awards. Both
the By-Laws Committee and Logo Committee have been formed and the timeline
of each committee’s work schedule has also been suggested. The ISBS had
agreed upon to provide two 600 Euro Student Travel Awards starting this
year. Likewise, it accepted the proposal submitted by Dr. Randell Jensen to
host the 28th International Conference on biomechanics in Sports in 2010 in
Northern Michigan University, USA. We look forward to meeting in Michigan.
Unfortunately, not all events transpired on a positive note. During the
conference, we received very sad news from Barbara A. Gowitzke. Her husband,
David B. Waddell, one of ISBS’ life members died in June after a lengthy
battle with colon cancer. For one and a half-year, David struggled
courageously, aided by the love and support of his family. He was granted
Life Membership in ISBS mainly because of his significant role in re-writing
the Constitution and By-Laws of our organization in 1986. As evidence of his
sheer brilliance, this document has stood the test of time, with most minor
changes made only recently. For several years, he was a forward-thinking
member of the Board of Directors. David will be remembered mostly as a man
who encouraged the society to believe in itself and its mission. His passing
is undoubtedly an immense loss to the society. The society expresses its
deepest sympathy to Barbara and the rest of David’s loved ones. Moreover,
during the post conference members approved the motion to direct the
host of the 2009 conference to provide an invited keynote lecture on
badminton and/or racquet sports in David Waddell’s name.
The ISBS
2008 has been successfully closed. I look forward to seeing you, your
family, your colleagues, and your students again in the 27th ISBS Conference
in Limerick, Ireland from 17 to 21 August, 2008.

Opportunities in Authoring and Delivery of On-Line CPD |
|
Further to the VP Research
and Projects Report at the AGM focusing on opportunities for ISBS members to
be involved in production of web-based continuing professional development (CPD),
the required infrastructure has been consolidated. Two developments at the
University of Edinburgh exemplify possibilities for ISBS members. The first
is a contribution to the Postgraduate Programs in Sports Coaching offered by
The University of Queensland (www.hms.uq.edu.au/sportscoaching)
to suitably qualified coaches internationally. Edinburgh’s contribution is a
unit on strength and conditioning by Professor Mike Stone and Dr Tony
Turner, to commence in September this year. The University of Queensland is
also interested in material that is specific to particular sports. For
example, the University of Edinburgh is producing units of interest to
swimming coaches. CAPDM, a company that specialises in production and
delivery of CPD material (http://www.capdm.com/capdmweb/app)
is converting the material provided by the academics into appealing and
effective format compatible with the University of Queensland
infrastructure. While interaction with the University of Queensland is
necessary to maintain efficient record keeping, quality control, and
seamless progress towards the ultimate qualification, the units offered by
partner institutions are financially independent. For example, the income
received from each student electing a University of Edinburgh unit is
distributed according to a business model agreed by CAPDM and the University
of Edinburgh. In addition to covering the production costs, income is
apportioned to the institution and to the authors of the material.
The second possibility is to
take the lead in developing new courses. For example, in addition to
contributing units to the University of Queensland postgraduate programs,
the University of Edinburgh is producing courses from certificate to masters
level specifically for swimming coaches. Similarly, ISBS members have an
opportunity to utilise the existing CAPDM models to reduce greatly the
workload associated with establishing a new CPD delivery infrastructure.
You may be wondering about
the Coaches Info Service (CIS) and whether it plays a role in the above
models. The CIS is now maintained by CAPDM. It will continue to be used as a
‘free-of-charge’ repository of information for sports practitioners but will
also advertise the various on-line courses available. Also, students
enrolled in the CPD courses can be referred to relevant material residing on
the CIS as part of their coursework. Clearly, there is potential for editors
and authors of CIS material to capitalise on that work in conjunction with
the on-line CPD initiatives.
If you wish to explore the
possibilities for your institution please contact me for more information.

Online Manuscript Submission for Publication in' Sports
Biomechanics' |
|
The online manuscript submission system for 'Sports
Biomechanics (SB)' is now up and running. The URL for the SB's Manuscript
Central site is
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/rspb. Check the journal homepage(http://www.informaworld.com/rspb)
for the list of recently published issues and articles. To submit a
manuscript for publication in SB, you will need to create your account
first. By default, you will be given the author and reviewer privileges. It
is important for you to supply up to five keywords that best describe your
interest areas. There are a set of keywords registered but you may enter new
keywords. I'd like to encourage all competent biomechanists to register on
the system so that I can utilize your expertises in the reviewing process.
With your support, SB will grow into a great asset to the field of sport
biomechanics and biomechanics in general.
SB is a relatively young journal, in its 6th year of circulation, dedicated
to sport (and related) biomechanics. SB is the official journal of the
International Society of Biomechanics in Sports (ISBS) and is published by
Taylor & Francis. SB is currently covered by several Thomson Scientific's
products such as Journal Citation Reports(R) and SCI Expanded(TM) and
included in databases such as InformaWorld, Medline and SPORTDicus. Although
the impact factor is not available yet, SB has been well perceived by
biomechanists in the area of exercise & sport science (Knudson & Chow,
2007). The types of accepted manuscripts are Original Research, Reviews
(normally by invitation only), Teaching, and New Methods and Theoretical
Perspectives. Currently, three issues are published a year but SB will
become quarterly no later than 2009.
The author guidelines are available at the abovementioned Manuscript Central
site. I look forward to receiving your manuscripts and your contributions to
the journal.

Student’s opportunity in Germany! Master
Course in Sports Science conducted in English.
|
Dear Colleagues,
For most Students studying in Germany was out of question because of the
foreign language German, hard to learn and not one of the world languages.
From this year onwards the University of Konstanz offers a Master Course in
Sports Sciences fully taught in English. So, students from around the world
can experience a different environment and still can use English in class.
The M.A.-Study is qualifying students for the various
scientifically-oriented professional fields of sport, sport education and
sport sciences. The foundations of the M.A.-study are - besides
didactical/methodical as well as sport-practical knowledge and experiences -
especially the dealing with the scientific methods and themes of the subject
field. The study is geared towards discussing the innovations grounded in
sport sciences in regard to its actual needs and to the transfer of the
scientific results to practice.
The M.A.-Study is conceptualized in a way, so that the graduates of this
study can mainly work in sport sciences institutions and research units or
decide to receive a deepened scientific further qualification (Ph.D). This
in turn will allow them to work in scientifically oriented and characterized
professions.
Organization and Cost:
1. The four semester study (after B.A. or B.S.) is a combination of
distance learning (Semester 1 – SS 2008), residence in Konstanz (WS
2008/2009 and SS 2009), and free choice of stay (WS 2009/2010 – writing the
Master thesis).
2. The whole study is conducted in English.
3. The study fees for one semester are € 587.70 and for the complete
study € 2350.80.
The study will be carried out with various didactical innovations (e.g.
distance learning, team learning, e-Learning).

Message from the president :
"Happy New Year 2008!"
Prof. Dr. Youlian Hong
(January 2008)
|
Dear ISBS members,
Happy New Year!
In 2007, we celebrated the 26th anniversary of the
International Society of Biomechanics in Sports. We also gathered in
Ouro Preto, Brazil, for the 25th International Symposium on Biomechanics
in Sports (ISBS2007) last August 24-28. This is the first time that ISBS
has had its annual symposium in the South American Continent. Thus,
except Africa, the geographic spread of ISBS symposium has encompassed
all continents of the world. This reflects the core objective of ISBS:
to promote biomechanics in sports all over the world.
The members of the Board that consists of the Directors
of the Board and the Executives of ISBS worked hard during the ISBS2007
to discuss further the developments of ISBS while maintaining its
tradition and vision. The discussion covered broad issues that include
the election of a new Secretary General, By-Laws Committee, Guidelines
for ISBS Conferences, Rename ISBS Symposium, Guidelines for Hans Gros
Award evaluation, Webmaster, ISBS logo, Students’ conference
scholarship, ISBS 2009, ISBS2011, Meeting time in ISBS conference, and
the like. The detailed discussion of each issue can be found in the pre-
and post-conference meeting minutes that will be presented to you soon.
In this note, I will report on some pieces of information that are
important for the Society and that relate to its members.
1. ISBS logo. As reported by Mr. Drew Harrison in the
pre-conference meeting, among 82 members who participated in the e-mail
vote, 52 agreed while 22 disagreed to change the logo, with 8 ballots
deemed invalid. The post-conference meeting concluded that the President
would appoint a committee to move the logo issue forward. I am pleased
to announce that Dr. Spiros Prassas, Director of the Board, has been
appointed as the Chairman of the Logo Committee. Dr. Prassas will form a
committee to deal with this issue.
2. Students’ conference scholarship. In the same meeting,
Dr. Young-Hoo Kwon informed the committee that there would be increased
income from the new agreement of Sports Biomechanics with the publisher
Tailor & Francis. Young-Hoo suggested that a scholarship be established
to support the students participating in the ISBS symposium. In the
meeting, it was agreed upon that this proposal be supported. The VP for
Conferences was directed to investigate proposals and report back to the
Board of Directors. Dr. Mario Lamontagne, the VP for Conference, is
working on this issue.
3. There are many other positive moves initiated by the
Executives and Directors, among which, I would like to mention the ISBS
Archive System. In the Pre-Conference Meeting of ISBS2007, Dr. Manfred
Vieten, the Treasurer, proposed to initiate an archive system for ISBS
conference papers. The Board endorsed this proposal with a financial
support scheme. Today, we can see that the development of the archive
system is in progress. This system is significant because it can be
extended to the meeting minutes of ISBS, which will record the historic
development of the Society. Thank you Manfred for your great work!
4. ISBS has joined the on-line courses in coaching
science an time initiated by U21 Sport and Exercises Sciences group
through the initiatives of Dr. Ross Sanders, the VP for Research. In the
meantime, Dr. Angus Burnett, VP for Public Relations, is working to
recruit new sponsorship of ISBS and develop new collaboration with ISB.
5. One issue that may interest members is the new ISBS
Fellow program. Members who are interested in submitting an application
for the award of ISBS Fellow can expect to receive an invitation of
submission in spring.
6. Finally, members who plan to host the 28th
International Symposium on Biomechanics in Sports (ISBS2010) can start
preparing their proposals. The invitation for submission of proposal
will be sent via e-mail soon.
See you in Seoul for ISBS2008.
