FUMIKO MOTOHASHI NAMED 2008 OUTSTANDING STUDENT LEADER
Ms. Fumiko Motohashi was selected as CSU, Chico’s Outstanding Student Leader for 2008. Originally from Japan, Fumiko has been studying at CSU, Chico since 2004. She is majoring in International Relations and minoring in Environmental Studies and Managing Sustainability. Despite a heavy courseload and numerous extra-curricular leadership roles, Fumiko has been named to the Dean’s List six times in recognition of her high academic achievement, all while studying in a second language.
Fumiko has demonstrated great leadership ability on campus, serving as President of the International Neighbors Club, a club which shares U.S. culture with international students and allows international students to share their cultures with each other. She volunteers every semester to assist with the week-long Orientation for new international students. Her enthusiasm and friendliness immediately puts the new students at ease as she welcomes them to the community.Fumiko’s commitment to advancing campus internationalization is evident in her work as Chair of the task group for Integrating International Students into the Campus and Community. This group of students, staff, faculty, and community members is arranging a program for new international students and domestic students to meet at dinners hosted by community members. In addition, they are developing a short-term homestay program option for international students. Fumiko serves on the campus internationalization steering committee where she provides a student’s perspective on the campus-wide initiative and coordinates the work of her task group with the other five task group chairs.
Fumiko is involved in many activities on campus including the Ballroom Dance Club and Model United Nations, for which she won the Distinguished Delegation Award at the 2006 America West Conference. Her love of nature and outdoor activities has also taken her as far as the Galapagos and she is committed to preserving our planet as demonstrated by her involvement in many sustainability projects.It is with the greatest pleasure that we congratulate Ms. Fumiko Motohashi for winning the 2008 Outstanding Student Leader Award.
