Conditional Admission

Students who do not meet the English proficiency requirements, may be able to apply for conditional admission. In this case, students study English at the American Language and Culture Institute on the CSU, Chico campus. When students reach proficiency, they may begin their studies at the University.

Bachelor's Degrees

All majors are eligible to apply for conditional admission.

Master's Degrees

The following programs will consider students for conditional admission:

  • Art (Art History, Fine Arts)
  • Biological Science
  • Communication Studies
  • Education
  • Electrical and Computer Engineering
  • Environmental Science
  • Geosciences
  • Kinesiology
  • Political Science
  • Public Administration
  • Recreation Administration
  • Teaching International Languages

The following programs will not consider students for conditional admission:

  • Business Administration (MBA)
  • Communication Sciences and Disorders
  • Computer Science
  • Nutritional Science
  • Social Work

To Apply for Conditional Admission:

Students must submit applications for both CSU, Chico and the American Language and Culture Institute. If accepted, students will receive an I-20 issued by California State University, Chico. Graduate students must also submit any additional application materials, including GRE if required. All items can be mailed in one package to the Office of International Education.

American Language and Culture Institute sessions start approximately every two months. Students will be responsible for paying the ALCI tuition while enrolled at ALCI. Please see the ALCI calendar and costs webpage for more information.
