Accounts & Access

Access to CSU, Chico systems, networks and services is controlled by several systems and accounts. Most systems on campus use one of the the two primary authentication systems: Microsoft Domain Services or the Chico Directory (LDAP).

Faculty and Staff Email (Exchange)

Microsoft Exchange is the primary email and calendaring system for faculty and staff. Outlook is the preferred supported client for Windows and Outlook or Entourage are supported for Macintosh. Accounts are typically created when the hiring department requests an account on behalf of a new hire. Faculty and staff may also request an account for student staff or teaching assistants. Exchange also controls access to desktop computers (PCs and Macintoshes) and access to many campus services via the Microsoft Domain named Chico. More information...

CHICO Domain Authentication

A CHICO Domain account is used by Faculty, Staff, and Student Staff to log on to campus computers and access resources (like the file server Bay). This is the same as an Exchange account, except that a CHICO Domain account does not have an e-mail box associated with it. This is also referred to as a "Domain Only" account. Typically a CHICO Domain account is requested for someone who needs to log onto campus computers, but does not need/want Exchange e-mail or calendaring. If you wish to log on to campus computers AND use Exchange e-mail and calendaring, you should request and Exchange account. More information...

Chico Directory (LDAP) Authentication

All CSU, Chico faculty, staff, students and applicants automatically have an account created in The Chico Directory. This service uses the LDAP protocol, so accounts are often referred to as "LDAP Accounts". The Chico Directory is used for authentication by many non-Microsoft services on campus including: The Portal, Wireless, VPN, WildcatMail (Google), Google Apps for Education and more. Student Email (WildcatMail Powered by Google)

As mentioned above, access to WildcatMail powered by Google and Google Apps for Education is authenticated on campus using the Chico Directory. All official student communication will be sent to this account, although you have the option to set email forwarding to a preferred account within your account settings. In addition to Mail, users also have access to Docs, Calendars and Sites. User ID information is also synchronized with Google for direct access without going through the Chico Directory for authentication. More information...

Account Syncing for Faculty and Staff

Faculty and staff have Exchange accounts that are created with the same user name as their LDAP account and passwords are synced between both systems. So faculty and staff users effectively have one username and password to remember to log into most services on campus whether they are Exchange or LDAP authenticated.
